Winter can be tough on your horse’s coat. Cold, wet weather can leave hair dry, brittle, and tangled. With the right grooming routine, you can protect the coat, maintain shine, and prevent winter-related skin issues.
1. Use a Gentle Detangler
- Spray a safe, natural detangler on manes and tails
- Helps prevent breakage from brushing
- Ideal to use before and after rides
2. Regular Brushing
- Curry comb and massage entire body
- Brush in the direction of hair growth
- Stimulates natural oils for a shiny coat
- Removes dirt, mud, and loose hair
3. Maintain Clean Hooves and Legs
- Pick hooves daily
- Clean mud from legs to prevent skin irritation or thrush
4. Bathing & Coat Care
- Limit baths in extreme cold
- Bath in tempartures above 58 degrees farenheit (with warm water)
- Use warm water and mild shampoo only when necessary
- Consider grooming wipes or waterless shampoos for quick cleanups
- Use a fleece or wool cooler immediately after scraping body down
- towel off legs, face, ears, and tail
5. Monitor Skin & Coat Health
- Look for dry patches, cracks, or flaking
- Add omega-3-rich feed or supplements for coat quality
- Keep blankets dry and clean
6. Use Hoof Oil or Creams
- A rich hoof cream or oil maintain hoof moisture in dry winter climates
- Corona and Old Timer’s are my top choices
